Racial Traits
Core Racial Traits
| Trait | Effect |
|---|---|
| Beguiling Glow | Standard action fascination effect within 20 ft (Will save). |
| Bioluminescence | Emits light in 20-ft radius; can suppress/reactivate as move action; stealth bonus when suppressed. |
| Cephalume Movement | Land speed 10 ft; swim speed 30 ft. |
| Cold Resistance | Resistance 5 to cold. |
| Darkvision | Darkvision 60 ft. |
| Depth Inured | Immune to dangers of extreme depths. |
| Plantlike | Counts as both aberration and plant for effects; defensive save bonuses vs listed conditions. |
| Symbiote Adaptation | Bond with one krikik symbiote option. |
Beguiling Glow
As a standard action (while bioluminescence is active), create flickering patterns. Sighted creatures within 20 feet must succeed at a Will save or become fascinated while the display continues (standard action each round). Creatures that understand Lumos are unaffected.
Bioluminescence
You increase light level by one step in a 20-foot radius. You can suppress/reactivate this light as a move action and gain +4 racial bonus to Stealth when suppressed.
Cephalume Movement
You have land speed 10 feet and swim speed 30 feet.
Cold Resistance
You have resistance 5 to cold.
Darkvision
You have darkvision 60 feet.
Depth Inured
You are immune to dangers of extreme depths.
Plantlike
For type-targeting effects, you count as both aberration and plant (using whichever interaction is applicable per effect). You also gain +2 racial bonus to saves against mind-affecting effects, paralysis, poison, polymorph, sleep, and stunning unless the effect explicitly works on plants.
Symbiote Adaptation (Krikik)
| Krikik | Effect |
|---|---|
| Airjet | +10 ft to land and swim speeds; once/day swift action doubles movement for the round. |
| Electrostatic | Converts half weapon damage to electricity and can grant staggered critical effect handling. |
| Sharprock | +1 racial bonus to AC. |
| Siltsight | Doubles darkvision range and ignores nonmagical fog/mist/cloud concealment. |
| Tentacle | Increases natural reach by 5 feet. |
Vital Stats
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Average Height | 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 ft. |
| Average Weight | 200 to 400 lbs. |
| Age of Maturity | 12 years |
| Maximum Age | 70 + 2d10 years |
Lore
Overview
Cephalumes are methane-adapted, bioluminescent aberrant sophonts with plantlike internal physiology. Once considered a hypothetical species, they became a major Pact Worlds contact after post-Gap emergence and Drift integration.
Civilizational Profile
Their culture combines deep ancestral tradition, visual rhetoric, and post-Gap industrial expansion. They maintain strong continuity with pre-industrial heritage while integrating select external technologies.
Adventure Role
Cephalume characters are strong in environmental adaptation, sensory control, and utility-oriented support. Their identity arc often explores tradition versus interstellar modernization.
Physical Description
Cephalumes have cylindrical muscular bodies, frilled heads, tentacular appendages, and a powerful foot with multiple tentacular toes. Individual bioluminescent patterns are unique and form the basis of personal expression and language.
Despite cephalopod-like external cues, their internal biology is closer to plant structures, including fibrous organ architecture and radiation-based metabolic adaptation.
Society
Cultural Structure
Cephalume society is tradition-rich, ancestor-conscious, and rhetorically sophisticated, with strong emphasis on etiquette, memory, and ceremonial continuity.
Language and Communication
Lumos, their native language, is high-bandwidth bioluminescent signaling. It is extremely information-dense at short range and has shaped politics, education, and public coordination.
Modern Transition
Post-Gap industrialization and spacefaring expansion introduced new institutions without fully replacing older cultural logic, producing a layered society where ancestral forms and modern logistics coexist.
