How magic and spellcasting work in Starfinder
Magic in Starfinder coexists with advanced technology, and many practitioners blend the two in innovative ways. Spellcasting classes like the mystic and technomancer prepare and cast spells using spell slots organized by level, from cantrips (0-level) through 6th-level spells. To cast a spell, a character must have a sufficiently high ability score in their key ability (Wisdom for mystics, Intelligence for technomancers). Spells have various components including verbal, somatic, and material components, and many have saving throws that allow targets to resist or reduce their effects. Spell resistance is a special defensive ability that some creatures possess, requiring spellcasters to make a caster level check to overcome it. The system also includes spell-like abilities, supernatural abilities, and hybrid items that blend magic and technology.
